Can You Make Dessert Healthy?

I don’t care who you are, you will get a craving for something sweet now and then. Unfortunately, the vast majority of desserts are packed with empty calories and have little, or no, nutritional value. It’s easy to lose yourself in a big dish of ice cream or a large slice of pie. Even if you’ve been eating healthy, one dessert can quickly put you past the calorie level you want to stay at.

Low-Fat and Sugar-Free Are Overrated

Also, there are still a bunch of desserts advertised as low-fat. This has become less of a thing in recent years though, as more and more people have learned that it’s not necessarily about the amount of fat in them, but the amount of sugar. Of course, now a lot of desserts are sugar-free, but this comes with its own issues. They’re not going to be good for you either and can cause digestive discomfort.

Make Your Own Healthy Desserts

So, is it possible to make dessert more healthy? Of course, it is though it may require you to make your own. This is what I started doing to avoid ice cream, which is never gonna be a good thing to have in your diet. I found that by using yogurt and a handful of other items, I can make my own frozen yogurt protein bars.

Ingredients To Use

To make my yogurt bars I use a variety of tasty foods that go well together. I like to use peanut butter, honey, banana, chocolate protein powder, and granola. I mix them all together in the yogurt, which creates a nice, thick dessert all by itself. Of course, you can use what you like, though some type of honey or jelly will give your bars sweetness, which I think is a must.

Mix It All Up Together

I start with one pound of greek yogurt. This is half of the container for the type of yogurt I get. I like Trader Joe’s plain greek yogurt as I think it has the thickness I’m looking for. The yogurt is scooped into a bowl before the rest of the ingredients are added. I also will use the yogurt container itself to mix everything in if it only contains half of the yogurt since everything will fit in it at this point.

Usually, I’ll add 2 scoops of chocolate protein powder to start. The rest of the ingredients follow in any order you prefer. I used to mix the yogurt, protein powder, and banana before adding everything else. These days, I like to put everything into a bowl or container together, then mix it all up. The end result looks as follows:

 

How Do You Prefer Your Homemade Dessert?

Once I get to this point, I can store my concoction in small containers and enjoy it when I want. If you freeze it for 2 or 3 hours it becomes the perfect consistency for a dessert comparable to ice cream. It really depends on how frozen you want it.

If you want to create dessert bars from this delicious mixture, you need to start by blending it. I use a small Magic Bullet blender to get blended up. Doing this will thin it out so it can be poured into plastic popsicle molds. Once you set these up, you can put them in the freezer and keep them there.

Time To Enjoy

When you decide you want to enjoy one of your homemade frozen yogurt dessert bars, you will have to run them under hot water for maybe 20 to 30 seconds. At this point, it should be easy to pull the bar out of the plastic. Now you can enjoy a truly delectable dessert you made at home.
